Works in Wood

September 16, 2011 — October 9, 2011

Gallery North presents Works in Wood, hand crafted furniture, sculpture, bowls and decorative items by six of the area’s premier wood workers. John Cino carves undulating vertical pillars; filled with movement, they are reminiscent of a dance of sea and clouds. Three of his carved abstract sculptures are included in the exhibition.

David Ebner displays an outstanding, masterful trunk, fashioned in maple and built in the tradition of early 18th century blanket chests, opening at the top and including a lower drawer. The chest features hand-forged handles, key and lock. His versatility and originality are also apparent in his bent plywood and bamboo side tables and tray table.

Russell Ebner’s pieces reflect his refined sensibility and quality workmanship. Two tables, a chair, and a hanging baby cradle he designed will be on display. Each piece demonstrates that the best knowledge of woodworking traditions paired with a personal sensibility for the exquisite edge can yield stunning one of a kind work.

Don Lindsley creates turned bowls and decorative vases from a variety of local woods. Some have been inlaid with malachite, a process he has uniquely conceived. The wood and minerals work together to enhance his pieces with signature paint-like colored highlights.

Carl Siegel presents his hand-made large-scale chess boards, set on turned legs, with inlaid wood and carved elements. The accompanying chessmen are hand carved. Their size and elegance is a masterful homage to the ancient game of skill.

Hal Usher and his brother, Rick Usher, create turned wooden forms, pots, bowls and trays from local hardwoods they have polished to perfection. Depending on the type of wood and color, forms are selected to best show off the natural beauty of the wood.

This exhibition compliments the Long Island Masterworks in Wood on view at the Long Island Museum from September 16 through November 11, 2011.
