(Setauket, February 17, 2012) Gallery North is pleased to present “The Work of Women”, on view from March 9 – April 7, 2012. These outstanding women artists, who live on or around Long Island, bring an eclectic presentation to Gallery North.
Pura Cruz, Puerto Rico/Coram, has a B.A. in studio art from SUNY Stony Brook. The Smithsonian Institute honored her work in Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement. Pura’s “Broken Guitarra” series explores and mourns the loss of family, community, custom and identity.
Schery Markee Sullivan, Wantagh, began her formal training studying with abstract painter, Robert Kaupelis, at NYU. Schery’s Mother/Child Series embraces the bond between mother and child in soft yet powerful paintings. The Worry Doll series derives from Guatemalan folklore. These “Dolls” come alive in Schery’s paintings with vivid colors, movements and expressions.
Sheila Breck, Stony Brook, has her MA in Painting from C.W. Post. Shelia was deeply moved by the horrendous act of brutality against an Ecuadorean immigrant in Patchogue, NY, 2008. From this and other acts against immigrants she has turned to her art to express her grief and frustration.
Felicitas Wetter, Coram, has her BFA from North Texas State University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude. Felicitas has been an adjunct professor at many college campuses and has exhibited her work nationally and locally. The passion behind her work comes from memories of her extensive world travel.
Elizabeth O’Reilly, Ireland/NYC/East Marion, has an MFA from Brooklyn College and her B.Ed from the National University of Ireland. A documentary on her work was shown on Irish TV in 2002. Elizabeth’s work can also be seen at The George Billis Gallery, NYC. Her cityscapes reflect the industrial scenes of the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn where her studio is located. Elizabeth has a lighter side with her landscapes from Marion Lake on the North Fork of Long Island.
Erika Roth, Brooklyn, has a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. Erika integrates her personal obsessions by literally weaving them into her paintings. While the content is immensely intimate, the final objects illustrate the universality of her influences.
Pam Brown, Setauket, has a BFA from Alfred State College of Ceramics, and her MFA from Mason Gross School of Art. Pam was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts along with other awards. Her sculptures allude to plant life, animal life, and aspects of the human body.
Margaret McCann, Cleveland Ohio, has an MFA in Painting from Yale School of Art and is the Faculty Chair at the New York Academy of Art. She has had many solo exhibitions around the country and in Italy. Her “Giant” series, inspired by the monuments of Rome (where she lived for 8 years) involve metaphysical and sometimes political issues.
